How to Put a Simple Border Around a Print
In Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and some other programs
A tutorial by Barry Doig FPSNZ
Let's assume you want to put a narrow white border around a print and then put it against a black background for use as a digitally projected slide. The basic idea is to enlarge your canvas – twice
1. Choose your image and size it to what you want. Generally you would make it 800 pixels on the long side for a horizontal image, or about 750 pixels on the short side for a vertical image at 72 ppi. You would then place it on a black canvas sized to 1024 x 768 pixels. This would be suitable for a data projector, but not for printing.
2. Go to the Foreground or Background Color Selection Box at the bottom of the Toolbar and reset your Foreground and Background colours.
The Foreground and Background Selection Box
Clicking on the large black or white square A will open the Color Picker where you can change the colors
Click the small squares B to make the foreground and background colors the default. Or press D
3. With your image on the screen go to Image > Resize > Canvas Size. This is what you see
A Scroll to make the width in pixels
B click the centre square to resize all sides equally
C Set the canvas extension color to Background (white)
4. Reset the width and length to 805 and 605 pixels
5. Set the Canvas extension color to Background (White)
6. Click OK. You will now have a narrow white border around your image
7. Do the same again, but this time make the Canvas extension color Foreground, width 1024 pixels
and the height 768 pixels.
8. Sharpen if required, and save as a JPEG at 72dpi
You now have a white border around your print against a black background. By changing the color of the Foreground and/or the Background using the Color Picker you can change the canvas color.
